Forum: netlabels Subject: survey: what drew you to create a netlabel?

this question is prompted by my purely selfish desire to see more discourse on this fine forum.
i'm preparing a statement describing my experience to put on my website eventually, and i was basically wondering what other people's experiences have been, and what determining factors have been most important. i realize this has been covered to some extent in some off-archive sites with essays... but i thought it would be fun to gather some different perspectives in a less formal setting.

i could never give a definitive answer to such a question - theres just too many reasons why. but here's a few;

i've wanted to start a label for as far back as i can remember, this was the immediately available option. i also knew several ppl that were either musicians that'd contributed netlabels or were running netlabels (rohformat, plsdosomething, enough, inpuj, nishi, etc.) and i was loving what they were doing and releasing. ive long been a follower of netlabels.. for me in part it was an evolution after many years of tracker music.

over the years ive met alot of talented ppl that i always want to hear new music from or see new artwork from. album formats/concepts often make it even more enjoyable.

also.. theres always going to be tons of unused/unfound talent out there. digging around through the masses for such unique individuals and then working with them on a release is always a good experience.

possibly the largest influence was my involvement with dot9.ca, a release group from 2000 to 2003.

interesting answers so far...
i had been putting my music on my own website for a while, but had never been exposed to netlabels. i'd tried a few times to create labels with local artists here in oregon and back in NC, but it never came together. changing the focus of my site to become a netlabel seemed a logical thing to do, at least to get my music out there and network with other artists who are just trying to get their music out there too.
what resonated the most when i first discovered i could do it (thanks to the banks of servers that make it possible) was that i had been thinking for a while about how to make a plan to continue enjoying creating music for the rest of my life, no matter what the musical trends are. and i thought about certain new age musicians, whether or not i like their music, who live up on a mountain somewhere, release one album a year, and have a solid enough fan base that they can support them selves simply and just enjoy being alive. i suspect i'll live long enough to make that happen. in the meantime, releasing music by me and others kind of gives a similar liberating feeling.

but definitely i was attracted to the idea of a more level playing field, how it decentralizes some of the power held by physical media labels. most of us, im sure, have been making music since the days when labels weren't easily started, and many good compositions never got heard by people who would have liked them.

does anyone else think there is some inherently 'democratizing' quality to the ability to create a netlabel?

I was interested mainly in releasing stuff I thought no-one else would release.

Nishi began life as an attempt to provide a net label for west coast musicians (I was living in Vancouver at the time), as well as take some of the strain off of No Type (of which Nishi is/was a sublabel).

My label started as a CD-R label. I was familiar with netlabels already, and after considering Internet Archive's netlabel scene for a while, I decided to make Webbed Hand a netlabel, a move that opened up a lot of new possibilities and greatly expanded the potential listening audience.

Having more listeners is better, in my opinion, than struggling to make a small profit on music that has little or no mainstream potential.

I had a studio project ready to release, and after discussion with the other musician of the duo, we thought it would be a better idea to release it for free on internet than to make a '500 ex. CD'. I didn't know anything about netlabels at this time (2 years ago), and everyone was against that idea (for economic reasons)
I eventually decided to do it, alone. Then I had a time-consuming job and didn't pay many attention to the website for 6 months. And after this, I started to receive kind emails, and reviews, and even an interview. I discovered also archive and all the netlabel stuff.
Before this I had experiences in CD and vinyls releases, and since I run eDogm I feel way more free to do what I want in music. It really changed the way I make and listen to music.

I'm all about the fast cars, the booze and the groupies.

The music is really just a front.
